6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
In many Jewish homes today, there is a small container attached to the doorway. Inside the box there’s a tiny scroll containing the words of Deutoronomy 6:9. This is known as mezuzah and serves a tangible reminder of Gods ancient covenant with the Israelites and His desire to have first place in their lives.
In the Old Testament, God’s law was written down and passed down from generation to generation. In the New Testament, we learn that Jesus both fulfilled the old covenant and introduced a new covenant. This new covenant is written on our hearts.
Hebrews 10:16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”[b]
God’s Word is our scroll and it confirms the truths that He has already written on our hearts through the Holy Spirit. In spite of this, we sometimes forget.
What are some special ways you can remind yourself, each day, of the truth of God’s Word?
Well, copy verses on index cards to carry with you, or better yet, commit them to memory. Download the Bible App. Listen to the Bible through audio, videos, or take a few minutes of your time to affirm the scripture as an affirmation. The goal here is repetition. You have to create muscle memory. Read it every day as many times as possible. By memorizing the scripture it will speak to your heart in personal way. Whatever you do, make it fun and do not allow the routine to take away the beauty of your personal relationship with Gods Word. Remember the truth that God has written in your heart is for a purpose. To heal and restore us.
Father, thank you for writing Your truth upon my heart. Help me to look for tangible reminders of Your truth. Amen.
